Wendy Gittler – Statement

Dialogues and Departures take place in the spatial theater of a two dimensional surface. Encounters occur, as if under a proscenium arch, mingling mythical characters with particular personages and thereby changing the outcome of the myths. Gauguin often wrote about his search for a pictorial equivalent of thought. Likewise, these paintings wish to parallel a theatrical space where memory is distilled and characters appear as icons fusing past and present time.

Wendy Gittler has a Masters Degree in both Painting and Art History. She has been in numerous solo and group shows. She has taught at Hunter College, The School of Visual Arts, Parsons School of Design, The New York Studio School and Stony Brook University in New York City as well as having moderated many panels on themes in contemporary art. She has also traveled extensively in the Mediterranean and the tropics.
