FIRST STREET GALLERY congratulates artist member John Rohlfing on his inclusion in The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s permanent collection and the museum’s upcoming exhibition, “Shapes from Out of Nowhere: Ceramics from the Robert A. Ellison Jr. Collection.”

The exhibition showcases Robert A. Ellison Jr’s. recent gift to the Met of 125 modern and contemporary ceramics from his personal collection, a collection increasingly focused on the development of unconventional abstract forms and innovative techniques in the clay medium.

The exhibition of over 75 artworks and 49 ground-breaking ceramicists includes John Rohlfing’s “Constructed Teapot #21,” purchased by Robert A. Ellison Jr. in 1991 from the renowned ceramics specialist Garth Clark Gallery in New York City. “Constructed Teapot #21” will be on view in the exhibition from February 25th through August 29th, 2021.

John Rohlfing’s ceramic vessels have been shown both nationally and internationally. His work has been exhibited in five exhibitions at First Street Gallery. Rohlfing taught Ceramics, Photography, and Drawing courses at Post University in Waterbury, Connecticut and was Chairman of the Art Department (2001–2020). Rohlfing retired Professor Emeritus at the end of last year.
