55 and Counting – Press Release

55 and Counting

March 26 – April 19, 2025

55 and Counting Exhibition

Reception: Thursday, March 27, 6–8pm

First Street Gallery is proud to announce “55 and Counting,” an exhibition of gallery artists, in celebration of our 55th Anniversary, from March 26 to April 19, 2025. The Opening Reception will be held March 27, 6–8pm.

In 1969, First Street Gallery was launched by a small group of painters, primarily from Brooklyn College. Many were enamored with the timeless classical forms of the Renaissance. While some members of the arts faculty wished to revive the principles of drawing and painting from this revered period in art history, others emphasized perceptual observation in many of their classes. Still others continued to teach European Modernism. The 1980s and ‘90s in New York City introduced changing visual trends; artists of every persuasion sought to identify their epoch through personal vision and individual aesthetic style. An adherence to strict Renaissance principles faded. From then on, the gallery’s visual vocabulary shifted to embrace many new strands of artistic expression. Figuration remains a stable feature, but today, First Street Gallery represents a broad spectrum of highly creative artists working in diverse media and styles, as well as abstraction, examples of which are represented in the exhibition.
