FIRST STREET GALLERY is pleased to present Georgica: Small Works by Sallie Benton, on view from March 30 through April 24.
From the stillness of life during Covid, these paintings are “memories” of home; of years spent on the edge of the ocean in the late, summer light of Eastern Long Island. Painted in acrylic, on rag matboard, gesso and aluminum panels, these landscapes are reminders of that soft light and shining ocean.
Until now, Benton has been known for her large-scale portraits of people in oil. This exhibition represents a dramatic shift, both in scale and subject matter; original portraits from life – to intimate, dream like landscapes.
