Peter Malone – Statement

Looking back on the work I’ve completed over the past few years I sense a strain of dislocation. This happened intuitively. I made no conscious effort to address disaffection, political or otherwise. My subject is the experience of individuals. Context is important but ancillary.

I believe painting is an intimate medium through which a viewer engages one at a time with the material poetics of a thoughtfully made object. Therefore, I strive to embrace rather than address each painting’s subject.

My work often combines imagery with snippets of writing composed in various formats like monologue, questionnaire, free verse, prose, etc. The words are meant to voice an imagined character or narrator in each painting’s truncated drama.

The words are my own. I do not quote anyone, though artists, writers, public figures, and literary characters are occasionally referenced in titles.
