FIRST STREET GALLERY is pleased to announce Eve Mansdorf’s solo exhibition, “Goodbye to All That…”. Mansdorf’s work will be on view from May 21 to June 14, 2025, with an opening reception on Thursday, May 22, from 6 to 8pm.
Eve Mansdorf paints the observed world. In the sense that an observational painter cannot help but be a witness to their time and place in history, this exhibition presents an autobiographical and self-reflective look at the last five years. The paintings are characterized by the seemingly paradoxical juxtaposition of intimate or “small” subject matter with a large sized format.
Mansdorf’s work implies the interpenetration of the life of the individual and that of the larger community. The paintings exist at the borderline between public and private life. A couple in their living room watches the January 6th hearings on television; a woman waters plants on her backyard deck at the edge of a public alleyway; bathers hide, strut and dive at a public pool. Backyards, swimming pools and interior spaces act as stages for an encounter. People are immersed in their surroundings and inhabit environments as telling as their physiognomy. Objects are part of the narrative. Soon to be obsolete technology, last year’s car model, book titles, Amazon packages and political events project themselves into daily experience and almost unconsciously embed a larger framework into these ostensibly intimist works.
