Reception: Thursday, October 30, 2025, 6-8 PM
FIRST STREET GALLERY is pleased to present a series of new paintings by James Mullen from October 29 through November 22, 2025, with the reception on Thursday, October 30 from 6 to 8 PM.
James Mullen’s artistic practice explores the relationship between perception and knowledge, particularly through the interplay of painting and photography. His work investigates how visual ideas construct meaning. He is drawn to photography’s capacity for both documentation and creating visual meaning, contrasting it with painting’s unique ability to embody accumulated experience, time, and the human touch. Mullen’s projects navigate the intersection of these two media, examining the connection between direct experience and its virtual representation.
Mullen holds an MFA in Painting from Indiana University and a BFA in Sculpture from the University of New Hampshire. He has amassed an impressive record of more than 40 solo exhibitions at galleries across the country, including Paris, New York City, Chicago, and across New England. Since 2006 he has participated in over 120 invitational and juried exhibitions across the country, exhibiting paintings, drawings, and photographs. His extensive accomplishments include numerous fellowships, awards, and residencies, such as at the Petrified Forest National Park, the Ragdale Foundation, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, as well as several grants from Bowdoin College. His work is held in numerous public and private collections across the country.
