New York City, New York – “NorthScapes” is a collection of quirky and occasionally disquieting seascape and landscape collages and paintings that reflect the artist’s inner responses to today’s climate of uncertainty and upheaval. They pose the question, “What’s coming next?” As artist Marianne Barcellona notes, it’s hard to find one’s “True North” in times of extreme change.

The chaos of change and the search for “True North” are essential elements of Barcellona’s art. Working with thousands of random, previously-created scraps of torn, inked, brushed, and textured papers – each imbued with its own particular history and character – she slowly builds her images. The artist energetically pastes, cuts, scrapes, patches, tears, and re-affixes once-removed shards to allow her multilayered works of depth and intensity to finally emerge.

Barcellona has been the recipient of 15 fellowships at internationally renowned Artist Residencies, and her work has been included in over 80 exhibitions. She has presented 10 Visiting Artist Master Classes for Harvard’s Freshmen Arts Program, and given professional workshops internationally on Drawing As a Language and Landscape Collage.
