The images of these collages and paintings have been seized from disparate and cumulative memories; thus the personages and places become restructured and reassembled from diverse sequences and moments in time. Likewise, the spaces within the canvas traverse multiple time frames merging the past and present almost as a cinematic reel that can go backward and forward. Many of the paintings and collages can take years to finish thus adding the sediment of earlier depictions to a continual present that is both erased and preserved. The sources of my work come from both my subjective experiences and affinity with poetry, literature, philosophy, and the history of art.

Wendy Gittler has a Masters Degree in both Painting and Art History. She has been in numerous solo and group shows. She has taught at Hunter College, The School of Visual Arts, The New York Studio School and Stony Brook University in New York City as well as having moderated many panels on themes in contemporary and modern art.

She has written articles for Art Critical, Art News, Provincetown Arts and artists catalogues. She has also traveled extensively in the Mediterranean and the Tropics.
