In the world of painting, images and signs that evoke the passage of time have been both manifold and elusive. Over the years, the artist has been in search for the visual equivalents of “fleeting time” that can encompass both the past and present. Consequently, she feels never finished with her work and thus restarts only to find that space and forms change and mutate in ways one cannot envision. In this process of transformation, some personages can become variations on mythological themes. These paintings, drawings and collages grapple with different time spans that coalesce and create new structures and relationships.
Tempis Fugit by Wendy Gittler will be on view at First Street Gallery October 28 through November 21, 2026. The gallery is holding a reception for the exhibition on Thursday, November 5, from 6 to 8pm.
