Thomas Erben, Founder and Director of the Thomas Erben Gallery, which opened in 1996 with an installation by the now internationally recognized artist Senga Nengudi. Over the years, the gallery has organized numerous, often first US exhibitions – now considered historical – with artists like Adrian Piper (1997, ’98, ’00), Helena Almeida (2001), Fang Lijun (2004), Jutta Koether (2005), Dona Nelson (2006, ’08, ’14, ’15, ’17), Sheela Gowda (2009), Rose Wylie (2010), Gauri Gill, Mike Cloud (both 2014) or Harriet Korman (2019). He has also organized group shows focused on art from various geographic areas including India, Pakistan, Iran and Germany or centered around specific subjects such as the widely reviewed ecofeminism(s), 2020. Conceptually minded, the gallery strives to either re-contextualize or expose work that contributes to contemporary discourse and has been successful in placing works with major national, and international institutions such as MoMA, the Whitney, Guggenheim New York, Walker Art Center, MoCA Los Angeles, SF MoMA, the Art Galleries of Queensland and New South Wales, Lehnbachhaus Munich, Museu Serralves, and the Centre Pompidou. In addition, the gallery has also been accepted into global fairs, including Art Basel Hong Kong and Miami, Frieze London as well as New York, The Armory Show, and Art Cologne.
